It was the world’s most famous passenger ship disaster. On a cold, moonless night just before midnight, the ‘unsinkable’ RMS Titanic struck an iceberg.
Moments before impact, lookout Frederick Fleet peered into the darkness in horror at the approach of a menacing black shape. With the icy monolith just yards away, his alarm initiated frantic efforts to slow the ship and change course. They proved fruitless. Over the next few hours, an estimated 1,517 doomed souls met their watery fate in the freezing waters of the North Atlantic.
The grave of RMS Titanic, resting deep in the North Atlantic, remains a memorial to those that lost their lives, and a testament to those who bore the lifelong sorrow of that loss.
