Half Ounce silver coin – Australian American Alliance

The Australian-American relationship has been the central issue in Australian foreign policy since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. War in the Asia-Pacific brought Australia into a crucial and ultimately successful military alliance with its powerful Pacific ally, the United States.

The Australia, New Zealand, United States Security Treaty (ANZUS or ANZUS Treaty) is the military alliance which binds Australia and New Zealand, separately Australia and the United States to co-operate on defense matters in the Pacific Ocean area, though today the treaty is understood to relate to attacks worldwide.

Australia and the United States alliance is one which has strengthened over time and is considered very important. This 1/2oz silver bullion coin commemorates this bond and is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

Distinguished by a bright red-orange bill and white eye patches, the Emperor Penguin is the largest of 17 penguin species, the deepest diver of any bird, and the only animal to winter on Antarctica's open ice.

In order to survive the biting cold, Emperor Penguins are very social creatures that huddle together to conserve warmth. Each penguin spends time in the middle of the huddle to stay warm, but accepts when it is his time to move to the perimeter.

Female Emperors lay a single egg in autumn before heading to sea to hunt krill and squid.  Depending on the extent of the ice pack, they may be forced to trek long distances to reach the ocean. During the separation, males envelop the egg in a brood pouch above their feet.

By the time the eggs hatch, male Emperors have not eaten for several months.  When the females return with food for their chicks, hungry fathers head to sea.  From then on both parents attend the young.  In summer, when the ice around the breeding colony breaks up, the young learn to swim and fish by themselves.

The Black Rhinoceros is characterised by its sizeable frame and distinctive horns.  This magnificent species is thought to have poor sight, but a good sense of smell and hearing, and is believed to live between 40 to 50 years of age.

Over time, the poaching of the animal for its horns has escalated and remains the creature’s greatest threat.  The Black Rhinoceros is classified as critically endangered, and one subspecies, the Western Black Rhinoceros, was declared extinct by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 2011.

Political instability and wars have also severely hampered rhinoceros conservation work in Africa.  This situation has exacerbated the trade in rhino horn and increased incidents of poverty-induced poaching.  Habitat loss and changes have also contributed to the population’s decline.  It is now more important than ever to safeguard the future of this unique species.

The coin is struck by The Perth Mint on behalf of Coin Club Australia from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality.

GIANT PANDA 1OZ SILVER PROOF COIN - 2011 WILDLIFE IN NEED

This peaceful, bamboo-eating member of the bear family is native to China. It is easily recognised by the large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. Known for its solitary nature, the Giant Panda has an acute sense of smell and can grow up to five feet in height. The lifespan of this bear in the wild has not been confirmed but the oldest captive animal lived to 37 years of age.

The Giant Panda is listed as endangered and although estimations vary, it is thought that there are as few as 1,500 of these amazing creatures left in the wild.
